The history of ATRAN - Aviatrans Cargo Airlines began in 1942, when the company was originally established as the "Moscow Aviation Enterprise" in order to serve the requirements of the Aircraft Manufacturers in fast deliveries of engines, aircraft components and spare parts.

In 1969, the company set up another base Moscow-Domodedovo Airport for operations of its heavy freighters.

Following the growth of the cargo operations, the company was gradually expanding its fleet and services. In the mid 80s, the company changed its name and transformed into the Association "Transport Aviation" operating 29 freighters allover the entire USSR.

In june 1990, the Goverment of the USSR appointed "Transport Aviation" to be the first independent airlines in the USSR, allowing the company to separate from Aeroflot and operate domestic and international air cargo services under its own brand name AVIATRANS.

In 1993, AVIATRANS was privatized from 100% state owned company to a public limited liability company.

Since January 1, 1997 the company has been operating under its new registered trade name "ATRAN - Aviatrans Cargo Airlines"
